Hello! ¡Hola!
Saturday May 8 was a cold, damp day, yet a smaller number of hearty people still came out to the garden!
¡El sábado el 8 de Mayo era un día frío, húmedo, aún un número más pequeño de la gente todavía salía al jardín!
Young Sherrod, his little sister Anissa, Anne A and her daughter Bela (new to the garden!), and Katie D started making thank you notes for donors.
¡Sherrod joven, su pequeña hermana Anissa, Anne A y su hija Bela (nuevo al jardín!), y Katie D comenzó a hacer notas de gracias para donantes.
Two more new people came along, Celia and Paper, and were interested to hear about the garden and fill us in on their own community work.

Julie W and her granddaughter baked us delicious chocolate-chip cookies, and brought the shovels she had is storing for us. John and Laura came with news about the plants from May Day / Heart of the Beast Theater. They picked up a bunch of brassicas (broccoli and cauliflower) and tomatoes, and are taking care of them at their place until we are ready to plant. They also talked about their experience last week, planting the marigolds, weeding, and arranging a rock border at the front of the garden. Apparently the kids on the block (Brian and Junior, maybe others) were excited about more rocks to look under for worms for their chickens! Who knew the garden would also be a worm farm?
Julie W y su nieta nos hornearon galletas de chocolate deliciosas, y trajeron las palas que ella tenía almacena para nosotros. John y Laura vinieron y con noticias de las plantas a partir del “May Day” del Teatro “In the Heart of the Beast” (Corazón del Bestia). Ellos recogieron un manojo de brassicas (brécol y coliflor) y tomates, y tienen cuidado de ellos en su lugar hasta que estemos listos a plantarlos. Mark A came along with his guitar and enhanced the ambiance while we strategized about arranging for Steve M and his rototiller to be part of our groundbreaking next Saturday! Now all we need it a truck to bring the tiller to the garden from a few blocks away. We found a neighbor on the block who owns a pickup truck, Ricardo across the street, and left him a note to see if he can help.

Julie W says that people on the block are highly aware of every change that happens in the garden, and are very pleased. Various new people are coming along steadily. Jeremiah (a carpenter who lives on the block) and Glen (a musician who’s played with Bob Marley and other famous artists) may join us. Fred said he’ll be here. Spider passed by again and may stop in. A group of talented young people and adults expressed interest at the Pillsbury House arts event on Sat evening. Hopefully Luis, Trina, Maribel, Charel, Julia, and Fanta will join us!

In case you missed earlier updates, our soil has very minimal lead levels (20 ppm, whereas under 100 ppm is considered fine), so it’s safe to till. Our compost arrives this Thursday, a huge truckload, 18 cubic yards. To give you an idea of how much, the woodchip pile was 14 cubic yards.

Our task will be to 1) pick up any rocks or debris so we can run the tiller safely, 2) spread a layer of compost in all the planting areas, 3) stand back while Steve runs the tiller and meanwhile 4) turn over the soil at the edges of beds and in smaller areas the tiller can’t fit. If there’s time, 5) plant the broccoli and cauliflower seedlings.

When we are ready to rest, a suggestion is that we eat and discuss what elements we want to include in the garden, and get some volunteers to agree to draw up a layout this week. It’s everyone’s garden, so we would like everyone who’s interested to participate in the decisions! By the way, the organization Metro Blooms, which is installing raingardens in the area, has offered us a free stormwater and design consultation, and they have tips on which vegetables grow well in a raingarden.

We have shovels, but our other tools are not in yet. We are working with Chris Geiger at Parkway Hardware on a discounted price, and our landlord Chris Hanisch has kindly offered to purchase the tools for us. If anyone out there was about to donate anything, please tell us quick before Chris buys it!

What else do we need this Saturday, garden experts? If you can, please come with any tools you think we’ll need that day. We suggest you label your items. A wheelbarrow could be helpful. Elise K recommends using plastic sleds as an easy way to move the compost. If you can, bring a sled or two!

If anyone out there has rhubarb, and a desire to make dessert, it would be lovely. Rhubarb is such an easy plant that springs back on it’s own each spring, but it’s not familiar to all of us. It might be fun to let people see if they like it!
