Our groundbreaking day on Saturday 5/15/10 was a big day in the garden, with a record-breaking sized group! There were 41 of us, children and adults, including our City Councilperson Elizabeth Glidden, our landlords Chris H and Jamie L, cafe owner Melody and her mom Marian, many of our founding members and a number of new children and adults. Gardeners & visitors included: Malia B, Sarah U, Madelyne, Alasia, Anna, Fanta, Marian H, Miguel J, Pilar L, Brian L, Junior L, Melody H, Vanessa, Brian O, Leonardo, Esther O, Mark A, Sue S, James L, Julie W, Diego J, David S, Alex S, Veronica A, Dionicio S, Kelly, Brandon, Christopher, Silvia P, Fatima, Elizabeth G, Satya V, Luis, Chris H, Jamie L, Elias, Claire, Steve M, Shari A. and Kathleen.
¡Nuestro día groundbreaking el sábado 5/15/10 era un día grande en el jardín, con un grupo excepcional! Thank you to everyone for providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all, and a special thanks to our weekly phone callers who help all of us remember that garden day is approaching so we won't miss it. Veronica A, Hannah B, Tinicia L, Julie W, Lisa L, and Rita V have graciously agreed to call 10 people weekly. As our group size keeps increasing, we could use another caller, so let us know if you are willing.

Other preparation for the day included a meeting earlier by Silvia, Veronica, and Kathleen to create our workplan, do outreach on the block (including enjoying a yard sale and a cookout with the block club!), and make a trip to Parkway Hardware to replace the mattock handle. Thank you to Silvia and Mujeres en Accion for the funds to repair the mattock.

We had a good meeting to discuss some elements we may or may not include in the garden. Young Anna had lots of good ideas about fruits (blueberries, rhubarb, strawberries, grapes) as well as vegetables. We clarified what a "raingarden" is, and talked about the benefits in utilizing rainwater, as well as the extra work involved in digging out the area. I forgot to mention that there's a detailed description in the University students' plan of how to do it, and that we've been offered a free consultation by Metro Blooms, the raingarden experts, regarding stormwater usage and design. We can do it or not, and that's perfectly fine. Just wanted folks to know about the option.

We discussed garden longevity and wondered how long we'll be offered the privilege to continue gardening in this beautiful space. We asked Chris and Jamie, and they generously offered a committment for 5 years, barring any unforeseen changes to their financial situation. Thank you, Chris and Jamie! Chris and Kari Neathery (PPNA director) will meet on Wed 5/19 to formalize this agreement.

Julia on 32nd and 10th offered to donate heirloom seed potatoes to us. Fanta offered to pick them up.

We discussed whether it would be helpful to have a written design of what goes where in the garden. Several people said, let's do it, and James, Dionicio, Alex, and Esther offered to meet before next Sat to do so.

Laura and John continue to water and care for the seedlings from May Day, which are now enjoying the sunshine at the garden and awaiting transplanting once we have our compost delivery.

A few of us discussed the maple sapling in the SW corner of the garden, and agreed that a 75 ft future tree is not right for the garden. Mary Jo, another neighbor, will come by on the weekend to transplant it elsewhere.

Frank, a teacher at Transitions Plus in the Wilder School building and Jimmy, a neighbor 2 doors down from the garden, and a couple other nice guys helped unload several containers of soil donated for the garden.

Ila from Gardening Matters (GM) invited us to participate in the Parade of Gardens on Saturday August 21 from 10 am - 2 pm. We need to register by June 1 with GM if we want to participate. This would involve providng music, snacks, activities, and tours for the public. We are encouraged to invite public officials like Elizabeth Glidden (City Councilperson), R.T. Rybak (Mayor), Peter McLaughlan (County Commissioner), Jeff Hayden (State Representative).

Our next garden Saturday is on May 22 from 5 - 7 pm. There may be an unveiling of the design that the design committee will develop this week. Expect spreading of compost, turning it in to the soil, planting, selecting and planting seeds, listing anything else we need, deciding whether to participate in the Parade of Gardens in August, and maybe more.
