More seedlings were planted this week -- all of our cold crops! Next it's the cold-weather seeds.

Access. We had a slow start on Tuesday, as we realized that the building was locked and we had no access to our tools. It made us think seriously about how we can obtain or build a tool-shed. Laura Byard is posting an appeal online for us. If you're interested in helping make a garden tool shed a reality, please let us know!
Acceso. Tuvimos un comienzo lento en Martes, cuando realizamos que el edificio estaba cerrado y que no teníamos acceso a nuestras herramientas. Nos hizo pensar seriamente en cómo podemos obtener o construir un almacén para las herramientas. Laura Byard va a publicar una solicitud en línea para nosotros. Photos. Ted came to take photos, and will post them so we can all enjoy them. If anyone prefers not to have their photo taken or posted, just say the word. We would like to be sure that parents approve before their child's photo is taken or posted online as well. This article addresses some possible concerns. We can discuss on Saturday.

What we did. Crispina and Julio brought huge contributions for the compost from a flower shop. Laura, Laura, Penny, and Silvia removed last year's sunflowers. Angel, Brian, Trey, Camariana, and Tatiana carried our own homemade compost to the planting beds. Silvia planted peas, Laura Boeringa and Penny planted dinosaur kale, Kathleen planted cress (even though she's not sure what cress is!). The kids helped water in the new plants, using the water from the rain barrel. They learned that rain barrels use gravity, and how to get the water to flow by holding the hose down low.
Lo que hicimos. Crispina y Julio trajeron enormes contribuciones para el abono de una tienda de flores. Laura, Laura, Penny, y Silvia removieron las girasoles del año pasado. Angel, Brian, Trey, Camariana, y Tatiana ayudaron a abonar las cajones de siembra. Silvia sembró guisantes,(alverjas) Laura Boeringa y Penny sembraron cole de dinosaurio, Kathleen sembró berro (aunque no está segura de lo que berro es!). Los chicos ayudaron a regar las nuevas plantas, usaron el agua del barril de lluvia. Aprendieron que los barriles de lluvia usan gravedad, y cómo hacer que el agua fluya agarrando la manguera hacia abajo.
ANNOUNCEMENTS / ANUNCIOS
Student Volunteers. The 8th grade volunteers from Risen Christ school were amazing! John X worked with the "meditative group", laying bricks along the paths. Laura Byard worked with the "strong, energetic group" adding to and turning the compost. Kathleen worked with the "flexible group" to tuck in compost around the new broccoli seedlings, and to clean up a new bed. Thank you to the wonderful students and chaperones! Come back anytime!
Estudiantes Voluntarios. Los voluntarios del 8 º grado de la escuela de Cristo Resucitado fueron increíbles! Juan X trabajó con el "grupo de meditativo", poniendo ladrillos a lo largo de los caminos. Laura Byard trabajó con el " grupo energético y fuerte", añadiendo a y dándole vuelta al abono. Kathleen trabajó con el "grupo flexible" para meter el abono alrededor de las nuevas plántitas de brócoli, y para limpiar un nuevo cajón. Gracias a los maravillosos estudiantes y acompañantes! Compost Materials. Thank you, neighbors, for the leaves! Thank you Senora Nieves of New York Plaza Produce, 1304 Lake, for many crates each week of compostable fruit and vegetables! Thank you, South City Cafe and Freewheel Bike Shop for coffee/fruit/veg compostables. We've used ALL neighborhood-made compost this year, and learned that it's much healthier than the compost from the city (no offense, Minneapolis!), which is from yard waste, no food, so has less nitrogen.

- Fruit and vegetable waste for the compost bin (Cover it with leaves, so animals aren’t attracted.)
